Short Stories: Character Pieces by Brahms and his Successors
This presentation will use the late, shorter pieces of Brahms as a starting point for a discussion not only of Brahms, but of the short lyrical piece, its special nature and importance in Brahms’s time, and how it evolved from the romantic period into the early 20th century. Brahms stands at a turning point between Romanticism and Modernism, and the other composers I will treat all have differing relationships to his music, to German Romanticism, and to the 20th century. I will discuss each of their pieces and styles, and offer interpretive and performance suggestions relating to these pieces and to shorter pieces in general.
The pieces that I’ll be presenting are: Brahms – Intermezzo Op. 117#1, Rhapsody Op. 79#2, Medtner – Skaszki: Op. 26#1 and Op.35 #4, Fauré – Nocturne #6 in D-flat major, and Janâcek – In the Mists, #3. After the discussion, I will perform all the pieces in a group. I hope you will be able to join me!
